Field Spaniels are highly intelligent with an affectionate nature and an incredible devotion to their owners. They crave human companionship and exhibit a fervent desire to be a part of every facet of their human's lives. Males and female exhibit similar personality traits. Some say that the males can be a little more affectionate but this is not always the case. Whilst all dogs need to have the confidence to be on their own at times, Fields do best when they can live with their humans and as such living solely outside the house is not ideal for them. And they LOVE the car!
When meeting new people, Fields can be 'aloof' or reserved. Fields like to look over and assess someone first before launching into this new relationship. It may take a couple of meetings but then the Field will generally greet the person enthusiastically and crave their attention. This aloofnessshould not be confused with shyness or timidness, which is a different behaviour and not desired in the breed.
Generally, Fields have medium to high energy and are animated. They are bred for activity and endurance. However they do have an "off switch" and are just as happy lying under your desk while you work or snoozing in front of the fire with you.
Field Spaniels have a sense of humour and put this to good use. Many Field Spaniel carry the "bench surfing" gene so owners may need to learn not to leave food by the edge of the bench. (One particular Sunday lamb roast dinner springs to mind Fergus!)
Their closeness to their humans and their strong intuitive sense means they always seem to know when you are not feeling the best and just need an extra snuggle.
